As someone who has used both, it's obvious that Amazon is the Sears catalog. It's less intuitive that Google and Meta are advertising, until I remember that network TV is too. I think the main problem here, as usual, is displaced incentives. Efficiency decreases profit and human prosperity. That's perverse. It should increase both, but the impacts are misaligned.
Umair is looking at this from a consumer perspective and he’s right. However AI has proven value in business if it can allow one person to do what five used to do. It already does in many business contexts.
That means that 4 people are out of work. That 4 young people won’t put a foot on the first rung of the ladder. Won’t pay taxes of any significance.
I (a solo lawyer) can do by myself what would have taken an associate, paralegal, secretary, receptionist and librarian to do.
I pay quite a bit for this because without it, I could never go head to head with even small law firms, let alone the big firms.
The problem is, AI eats its children. And with a large number of tax paying white collar jobs down the tubes, capitalism simply is unsustainable.
And all this hype is based on Universal Basic Income. Asking the government to establish a UBI with tax payer's money while nobody works anymore and do not pay income tax. No Wonder these zillionnaires want to scrap social services, health care and education. They bought politicians, the medias and are destructuring the institutions national and international with obliging politicians like Trump. Destroying science, universities, suing their critics and everything that can raise to oppose this abomination.
Meanwhile, drill, baby drill. It's after all burning the candle by both end : economy and ecology.
